Borneo Family Adventure - 11 Days

A place steeped in myth and legend, Borneo is the ideal destination for an imaginative family break. And highlights abound in the state of Sabah. The highest mountain in Southeast Asia, Mount Kinabalu also offers huge biodiversity on its lower slopes. Another huge draw is Sepilok, which is world-renowned for its orangutan rehabilitation centre and its opportunities to spot other wildlife.

Day 1 - Kota Kinabalu - Arrival (D)

Upon arrival at Kota Kinabalu Airport, guests will be picked up by a private guide and driver and transferred to their hotel. There are plenty of optional activities available, depending on the arrival time which can be added to the itinerary, including:


Duration: 8 hours, 0900 pick up

Includes: Boat transfer, conservation fees and BBQ lunch

A visit to the Coral Islands within the Tunku Abdul Rahman (TAR) Marine Park, just 15 minutes off the coast of Kota Kinabalu. From the jetty, take a speedboat to Mamutik Island and then continue in the afternoon to Manukan Island. Here, guests can have lunch and enjoy the white sandy beaches and pristine waters of the TAR Marine Park for the rest of the day. Guests can swim, snorkel or sunbathe. The area features hard coral gardens and sandy bottoms, with shallow, calm seas no more than 20 meters deep, , making it ideal for observing marine life either during the day or at night. Enjoy a hearty buffet BBQ lunch on the beach of Manukan Island. Return to the mainland and then to the hotel.

Pick up from the hotel in Kota Kinabalu and proceed to visit the rich, cultural experience that awaits at the Mari Mari Cultural Village. An in-house guide will take guests to visit the traditional handcrafted buildings that house various indigenous native tribes practicing a range of traditional activities such as cooking bamboo delicacies, rice wine making and tasting, henna tattooing and more. The major highlight of the tour comes next - the cultural dances of the three major indigenous group of Sabah: the Kadazan, Dusun and Murut. Guests can learn about the history and rich traditions of these indigenous people before returning to their hotel.

This evening, guests meet their local guide in the hotel foyer for a brief walking tour of Kota Kinabalu, finishing with dinner at the Filipino Night Market for a local dinner, a bustling and colorful market located by the South China Sea (drinks not included).

Day 2 - Kota Kinabalu - Mt Kinabalu National Park - Kundasang (B)

Breakfast at the hotel.

Around 0800 this morning, transfer to Mt Kinabalu National Park. An area known for its incredible biodiversity, guests will hike local trails at the base of the mighty granite monolith, Mt Kinabalu, while the guide offers insights about the immense variety of flora along the trail, including their medicinal properties and their importance to local communities. Take a wander through the Kinabalu Botanical Gardens where a one-hour tour is provided, allowing guests to learn more about some of the 5000-6000 local species of flora found in the area (12pm start recommended – this is a joint tour and additional entrance fees apply).

Lunch at leisure in a local restaurant.

This afternoon, the tour continues to the Poring Hot Springs. Take a dip in the warm sulphur springs surrounded by rainforest before traversing the 41-metre-high canopy walk for a bird’s eye view of the surrounding jungle.

Continue to the accommodation at the organic Sabah Tea Plantation for an evening at leisure. Located 700 meters above sea-level, it is one of the last two areas of tea production in Malaysia.

Day 3 - Sabah tea plantation to Sepilok (B,L)

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast this morning at the cottages before taking a guided tour of the organic tea plantation to witness the processes involved in bringing tea to the table. There is a variety of medicinal teas available to try, as well as a range of local cakes and snacks.

After this morning’s tour, transfer to the Labuk Bay Proboscis Sanctuary, stopping for a picnic lunch of banana leaf rice or noodles en route (weather permitting, a local restaurant will be substituted). Arrive at Labuk Bay for the early afternoon feeding session. The proboscis monkey is unique to Borneo, with the males sporting huge floppy noses. This is a fantastic chance to get up close with these unique animals. There is a variety of other animals located in the sanctuary, such as hornbill birds and grey leaf monkeys, which guests might be lucky enough to view.

Then depart for the night’s accommodation – a unique longhouse situated in the middle of lush jungles, where guests can fall asleep to the sounds of the forest. Dinner at leisure.

Day 4 - Sepilok (B)

This morning visit the world’s largest orangutan rehabilitation centre at Sepilok. At the centre, guests can witness the orangutans being fed by the rangers. Please note the feeding times are very popular, so expect crowds at the platforms. Stroll the jungle-flanked wooden walkways to the central platform; orangutans can sometimes be seen from these platforms, so guests should have their cameras ready!

The afternoon is spent at leisure, allowing guests to enjoy many of the activities in the local area, before returning to the Orangutan Centre for the 1500 feed. Guest can then venture further along rainforest trails or visit the interesting and highly educational Rainforest Discovery Centre, with its incredible 28-meter-high, 147-meter-long raised walkway that affords exceptional canopy views. This provides a great opportunity to spot wild orangutans and some of the 250 species of bird that live in the Kabili-Sepilok Nature Reserve.


NIGHT WALK OF DISCOVERY TRAILS (1800-2000, join in Tour)

The jungle comes alive at night and this tour is a great opportunity to explore the often missed nocturnal animals that inhabit these lush jungles. A local guide will point out a variety of insects and wildlife that hide under the cover of darkness, before appearing literally right before your eyes.

Day 5 - Sepilok - Kinabatangan (B,L,D)

This morning’s adventure begins with a visit to the outstanding Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, where guests have the opportunity to observe these stunning animals. There are currently 36 bears housed at the center, which have been rescued from poachers. Guests also have the opportunity to adopt a bear to ensure the program’s - and the animal’s - survival (at guests’ own expense)

Depart on a two-hour journey to the Kinabatangan River, passing local villages. On arrival, take lunch. In the late afternoon, cruise up the Kinabatangan River to search for wildlife, most notably the proboscis monkey. Other fauna in the Lower Kinabatangan Reserve includes elephants, hornbills, gibbons and many species of bird. Return to the lodge in late afternoon for dinner.

Sepilok to Kinabatangan (120km) 1 hour 30 min

Day 6 - Kinabatangan - Sandakan - Homestay (B,D)

Wake up to the calls of gibbons and hornbills. Experience the early morning ambience of Sabah’s longest river, before proceeding to the Oxbow Lake to observe the many birds and monkeys that look for food in the early morning. Return to the lodge for breakfast before departing to Sandakan Airport for the flight to Kota Kinabalu.

On arrival in Kota Kinabalu, transfer north to one of most picturesque farming villages in Sabah: Kiulu. Stop en route at a government-run local conservation initiative to prevent overfishing in the area, known as Tagal.

Arrive at your traditional homestay, which comprises of a close knit Dusun community, and check in before taking part in some of the daily longhouse responsibilities including kitchen duties in preparation for a hearty dinner.

After dinner try your hand at grasshopper catching, their chirping resonates in the surrounding jungle! Sounds easier said than done as these little creatures can move and the local children have had lots of practice…can you keep up in this race?

Kota Kinabalu Airport to Kuilu (64 km): 1 hour 30 min

Day 7 - Village Cycling & White Water Rafting (B,L,D)

This day trip combines a morning of rural activities including jungle produce harvesting, hiking and an afternoon of white water rafting. After lunch, guests will head off on a two- to three-hour white water rafting trip on the Kiulu River. The route is lush and meanders through villages, farms and under numerous suspension bridges that link the local villages. The rafting is a gentle (grade II) and guests will spend as much time in the river as they will in the raft - the perfect way to cool off after a busy morning.

Return to the homestay for an afternoon at leisure before a traditional dinner is served.

The remainder of the evening will involve learning more about the ethnic arts and crafts of the Dusun people.

Day 8 - Farming Activities - Beach (B)

A leisurely walk to spot exotic birds with one of your hosts or just a lazy morning before you bid your hosts good bye. A beachside resort is the next stop and beckons for an afternoon at leisure. Alternatively, participate in an additional range of traditional activities before departing to the resort (additional charges apply) such as a Cooking Class.
