"Thank you for organising our holiday (to China).

We had a great time.

All of the guides were on time, very well informed and easy people to be with.

We have seen so many things and eaten in local places where we would never have gone by ourselves.

We wouldn't hesitate to recommend you and if you would like more details of our adventures or a statement of recommendation let us know."

Trek the Headhunters Trail - 4 Days

Deepest Sarawak retains much of its mystical allure. This trekking expedition, centred on Mulu National Park, bring guests to giant caves and offers superb nature-spotting possibilities. A river journey in a longboat, swimming opportunities and some superb hiking are other highlights of the adventure.

Day 1 - Arrive - Mulu National Park (D)

Upon arrival at Mulu Airport meet our local representative and transfer to your hotel for check in.

After lunch (own account), depart Mulu National Park headquarters, where guests will take a 3km elevated plank-walk to Lang Cave - the largest cave passage in the world (2161 meters long) – which adjoins the Deer Cave. Explore Lang Cave with its magnificent stalactites and stalagmites before proceeding to Deer Cave, where the biggest attraction is the colony of thousands of free-tailed bats that inhabit the cave. At dusk witness an amazing spectacle as thousands of these bats emerge from the cave in formation to forage for insects.

Experience night trekking along the paths to the park headquarters. From luminescent fungi to blinking fireflies, the jungle comes alive at night time and this is a fabulous opportunity to view creatures not visible in daylight, as they are attracted to the light of the torches as guests move through the jungle.

Overnight Mulu.

Distances and journey time

Mulu Airport to Mulu National Park (1.5km) 15 minutes

Day 2 - Mulu National Park - Camp 5 (B,L,D)

Breakfast at the Lodge.

After breakfast, which is accompanied by the sound of the jungle’s morning chorus, take a 20-minute longboat ride up the Melanau River to experience Mulu’s two ‘must-see’ limestone caves: Wind Cave and Clearwater Cave. These form part of the Sarawak Chamber - the largest connected cave system in the world (please note that on occasion water levels are low and guests will need to push the boat. Alternatively there is a 4km walking option). Explore the “King’s Room” before proceeding to Clearwater Cave. Walk on plank walkways that were built on the sides of limestone cliffs leading to Clearwater Cave. Then, climb up the steep steps that were carved into the side of the hill to get to the entrance of Clearwater Cave. Inside the cave, see the finer details of its various features and limestone formations.

Enjoy a refreshing swim and local lunch before continuing by longboat to Kuala Litut to commence your hike through the lowland forest to Camp 5, around 9km.. Bedding is not provided so bring your own sleeping sheet and a warm layer for cool nights. Mosquito nets are available to rent for a small charge. At Camp 5 you will sleep on mats on raised open air platforms in a mixed gender dormitory with shared bathroom facilities and cold water showers.

Distances and journey time

Mulu National Park – Clearwater Cave 20 minutes by boat

Clearwater Cave – Kuala Litut 90 minutes by boat (depending on water level)

Day 3 - Camp 5 - Longhouse (B,L,D)

Another early start to the day with a simple breakfast at the camp before commencing the 11.5km Headhunters trek to Kuala Terikan. The path is so named due the association as the route taken by warring parties between the Tutoh and Limbang Rivers. It is an adventurous route of water crossings by various methods and characterized by a vegetation of low-lying forest.

Arriving in Kuala Terikan, board a longboat (3 hours) and travel on the Terikan and Medalam rivers to an Iban longhouse. Subject to water levels, you may need to push the boat through various sections.

Staying in a local longhouse is a rewarding experience, gaining a respect for the basic facilities that are characteristic of the local life. A fabulous evening exchange of culture, customs, music and dance awaits.
