We had a great time.

All of the guides were on time, very well informed and easy people to be with.

We have seen so many things and eaten in local places where we would never have gone by ourselves.

We wouldn't hesitate to recommend you and if you would like more details of our adventures or a statement of recommendation let us know."

Family Wildlife & Jungle Stay - 9 Days

Not only is Kuching one of the most sophisticated cities in Asia, it is also ideally located near to some of Sarawak's most compelling nature draws. Proboscis monkeys, crocodiles and other exotic wildlife can be viewed at Bako National Park. The city is also well placed for access to the Fairy Cave System, a massive complex full of stalactites and stalagmites.

Day 1 - Kuching - Arrival

This Family trip is recommended for children 5 and above, and can be further tailored to your needs.

Guests will be met at the airport by their guide and driver and transferred to their hotel.

In the mid-afternoon, the guide will take guests on an hour-long walking tour of the Kuching Old Quarter to help familiarize them with this charming city, which is full of historical buildings and set along the Sarawak River. Along the way, the guide will introduce guests to the colorful history of the city and the many ethnic groups that call Kuching home.

Cross the Rejang River by traditional sampan to visit Fort Margherita for stunning view across old Kuching. This fort was built in 1879 by the “White Rajah” of Sarawak, Charles Brookes, and is dedicated to his wife. It now houses an historical museum.

Wander the lanes of the lively Malay Kampung next to the fort, sampling local snacks before returning across the river to mainland Kuching.

Tonight, guests will be able explore the cuisine of the Dayak ethnic group or sample the freshest seafood in a local dining court.

Overnight in Kuching.

Distances and journey time:

Walking Tour (total: 3 km): 2 hours

Sampan crossing: 15 min each way

Day 2 - Sarawak Cultural Village (B)

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before departing for an interactive living museum experience. This allows guests to delve into the myriad of cultures that can be found in Borneo, namely the Iban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, Melanau ethic groups, plus the Malays, Chinese and Indians. The Sarawak Cultural Village, which is spread over 14sq km, features magnificent architectural renderings, cultural dance performances, handicraft demonstrations, blow-pipe displays amongst other indigenous art forms.

Guests will be free to explore this informative museum and the driver will be on hand to transport them back to the hotel at their leisure.

Kuching is also known as the ‘City of Cats’, and there is an interesting museum en route from Sarawak Cultural Museum to the hotel. Guests can let the driver know if they would like to visit (there is no entrance fee).

Tonight, guests can choose to take dinner along the waterfront of Kuching, which provides a range of local and western restaurants.

Overnight in Kuching.

Day 3 - Kuching - Bako National Park (B,L)

There are few day trips from the city that allow guests to explore pristine rainforest, abundant wildlife, jungle streams, waterfalls, diverse plant life, secluded beaches, panoramic rocky shorelines, bizarre rock formations and an extensive networks of trekking trails. Bako National Park, which is just a 35-minute road transfer and 25-minute boat ride from Kuching, offers all of this.

Guests will meet their local guide in the hotel foyer after an early breakfast for the 35- minute drive to Kampung Bako. If guests want to skip the hotel breakfast, they can opt for a local one; Kampung Bako serves excellent ‘roti canai’ (flat bread with curry sauce). Upon arrival at Bako village, walk to the pier and take a 25-minute boat ride to Bako National Park, the oldest national park in Malaysia.

There are 16 diverse walking trails within this unique biome, containing all of the plant species found in Borneo. Guests can discuss their preferences with the guide, who will tailor the selected walking trail to their needs. They can also opt to laze on the deserted beaches or wander the boardwalks of the park HQ.

Proboscis monkeys gather by the beach in the mid-afternoon, catching crabs as the tide changes. This is a great location to watch these animals in the wild.

As Bako National Park is only accessible on the high and moderate tides, some changes to this

program may be necessary – the guide will advise.

Please note: This tour is not available during December-February due to rough seas. An alternative activity will be supplied.

Overnight in Kuching.

Distances and journey time:

Kuching to Bako Village (24 km): 35 min

Day 4 - Kuching - Fairy Cave - Biduyah Homestay (B,L,D)

Today guests will need to pack to a smaller bag (their large bags can be left at the hotel. Please refer to the packing list at the end of this program.)

After breakfast, grab a torch and depart the hotel for the Fairy Cave System, around one hour’s drive. This is the largest cave in Kuching and is accessible by way of a 30-meter tower. Created by water erosion, this massive cave system is full of stalactites and stalagmites, and guests can learn about the local and recent mythology of the cave system.

Continue by car for an hour to reach the homestay, where guests will spend the evening. This homestay has been chosen for its commitment to sustainable practices – both environmental and cultural. Guests will stay in simple accommodation as the guests of the Biduyah people and learn about the daily life in the jungle from their hosts, who have formidable knowledge of his local area; its wildlife, rainforest and local traditions.

On arrival at the village, guests will meet their hosts and take a tour of the village to understand its history and life. Take a locally-prepared lunch before heading into the rainforest and learning the medicinal qualities of the local flora and the myriad of uses for jungle plants. Visit the ancient headman’s house, which is full of skulls from centuries-old battles with the Iban tribes. Continue to a remote waterfall before returning to the village for dinner.

The evening is full of the sounds and colors of traditional Biduyah instruments and dance, in which guests are welcome to participate.

Caves to Jungle Homestay (50km) 1 hour 15 min

Day 5 - Biduyah Homestay - Orangutans - Kuching (B,L)

After a breakfast amongst the sounds of the jungle, travel the local Sirin River through the lush rainforest, by bamboo raft or traditional kayak (Class I & II – subject to rain). There will be safety briefings before the rafting commences. Along the journey the guide will share the river’s secrets, including its local history and fish spawning habits, and introduce guests to the jungle’s plentiful edible wild vegetables and ferns. Participate in harvesting and the art of cooking in bamboo, which will form the traditional lunch.

Guests will bid farewell to their hosts and continue to the Semenggoh Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre to observe the afternoon feeding. Established in 1975 as a sanctuary for injured and sick orangutans, it is now the largest orangutan center in Sarawak. Visiting this reserve is a fabulous opportunity to learn about the plight of the orangutans, and allows guests to view these majestic creatures up-close. As the orangutans are wild, sightings are not guaranteed, although they are common.

Guests will then proceed to the cooking class, where they will be able to learn the techniques and preparation of the local cuisine. The menu can be tailored to guests’ tastes and offers the chance to explore a range of ethnic groups’ cuisines.
