"Thank you for organising our holiday (to China).

We had a great time.

All of the guides were on time, very well informed and easy people to be with.

We have seen so many things and eaten in local places where we would never have gone by ourselves.

We wouldn't hesitate to recommend you and if you would like more details of our adventures or a statement of recommendation let us know."

Day 2 - Hue (B,L,D)

Imperial Treasures - 5 Days / 4 Nights - itinerary

Guests start their exploration of Hue at the Imperial Citadel where the Nguyen Dynasty ruled between 1802 and 1945. After exploring the ruins of this wonderful monument, take a ‘cycle’ through the Old City to Tinh Tam Lake where the emperors used to come to relax. Full of lotus flowers in summer, there are many local style coffee shops around the lake where university students come to study.

Enjoy lunch in Hue at one of the city’s most renowned restaurants, Ancient Hue.

Following the meal, guests depart for Khai Dinh’s Tomb which is traditionally Vietnamese in design with European touches, making it unique from the other tombs in Hue.

Ho Quyen, an arena where duels between elephants and tigers were fought for the entertainment of former kings, will be visited next. The last fight was held here in 1904 and although small, guests can climb the nearby ramparts and gaze down upon the area where the animals once fought. At the end of the tour visit the recently restored An Dinh Palace where magnificent murals can be seen, as well as the stunning façade where oriental and European designs are integrated. At the end of the tour, return to the hotel.

Dinner at one of Hue’s beautiful garden houses, known locally as ‘nha vuon’. These houses are traditional, privately owned and set in large and attractive formal gardens. Some have connections with the old Royal Imperial Court and the houses’ traditional architecture has long been associated with the natural environment and the ancient belief of ‘feng-shui’.

Day 3 - Hue - Hoi An (B,L)

Imperial Treasures - 5 Days / 4 Nights - itinerary

Today guests visit the 500-year-old village of Phuoc Tich with its worship halls and communal houses for a taste of ancient Vietnam. And stop at the historic Thanh Toan Bridge, one of two covered bridges remaining in the country. In the early morning, depart the centre of Hue and travel along quiet country lanes to Thanh Toan Bridge, passing by villages, quaint shrines and endless rice fields along the way. Built two centuries ago, the covered bridge is almost unique in that only two exist in Vietnam (the other being in Hoi An). Built as a tribute to the villagers by the wife of a high ranking Mandarin, the bridge has survived storms, floods and wars. Anytime it was damaged, the villagers always contributed to repair, renovate and preserve it. Next to the bridge is the local village morning market which can also be explored.

After visiting Thanh Toan it’s an hour’s drive north to the 500-year-old village of Phuoc Tich. Once famous and prosperous because of its pottery, the village has dozens of homes that are 100 to 200 years-old and several old temples, pagodas, worship halls and communal houses still remain. Many imprints of Champa and ancient Viet cultures are still preserved, such as lingas (a very complex symbol of Hinduism). The religious culture of the village is seen through its families, which have their own ancestral worship halls, each worshiping five direct generations. Enjoy a family-style Vietnamese lunch in one of the houses in the village.

Following the visit of Phuoc Tich, drive back to Hue then south to Danang City via the scenic fishing village of Lang Co and over the impressive Hai Van Pass, which affords spectacular views up and down the coast. In Danang visit the Cham Museum, which contains the finest collection of Cham sculptures in the world. Then, continue the drive to Hoi An where guests will spend the night at the luxurious Nam Hai Resort.

Overnight at the Nam Hai Resort.

Distance & journey times:

Hue - Hoi An (150km): 3 hours

Day 4 - Hoi An (B,L)

Imperial Treasures - 5 Days / 4 Nights - itinerary

Spend time with a local farming family to learn about their daily lifestyle and to discover the flavors of fresh Vietnamese cuisine. Bike along shady lanes to the village of Tra Que and join the farmers as they work on their vegetable garden. Try making tam huu, a local delicacy, at the end of today’s excursion.

After breakfast, guests will embark on a bicycle ride to a local farm in Tra Que Village. Take a trip around the vegetable garden and join the farmers in preparing the land and fertilising it with seaweed. Continue gardening activities such as raking, sowing, watering greens, picking greens etc. After the farming activities guests will be shown how to prepare the tam huu, a local delicacy they can enjoy before the ride back to Hoi An.

In the afternoon visit the ancient port town of Hoi An. Despite the passing of 200 years and the ravages of weather and war, the center of Hoi An remains much the same as it was in its heyday. A walking tour is the best way to see the wooden-fronted houses that once belonged to the town’s prosperous merchants, the Japanese Covered Bridge and the wonderful market, as well as the many silk, handicrafts, antique shops and galleries.

Evening at leisure.

Overnight at the Nam Hai Resort.

Day 5 - Hoi An (B)

Guests are free at leisure until their transfer by private car to Danang Airport for international flight or domestic extension.

As an option, guests can learn more about Vietnamese cuisine by taking a half-day cooking class or, for a thrill of adventure, a private speedboat tour of Cham Island and the surrounding marine park which lies 5km off the coast of Hoi An.
